Established in 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Alamosa, Colorado was named for the cottonwood trees which grow in the area (Alamosa is the Spanish adjective meaning “full of cottonwoods”). Located in the center of the San Luis Valley, Alamosa abounds in nature's wonders – the rugged grandeur of the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the scenic Rio Grande River, and the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park, home to the tallest sand dunes in North America.
