Searching for gold, Spanish explorers in the mid-sixteenth century trekked north from Mexico into the American Southwest. In their explorations, they discovered neither gold nor treasure - they did, however, become the first Europeans to witness this area's geological wonders.

The vast, flat, sometimes barren landscape of the American Southwest is abruptly interrupted by crumbling formations rising hundreds of feet into the air. Shaped over untold years by the slow, orderly process of erosion, plateaus deteriorate into mesas, which in turn wear away into buttes. Unrelenting, nature continues to erode until the butte is only a pinnacle, which will also succumb to the forces of wind and water and eventually crumble to the ground.

Deep in Navajo country, the stark beauty of these isolated sandstone masterpieces towering over the immense desert floor provides perhaps the most enduring images of the American Southwest. The sun-baked shades of these Southwest Butte Rugs are drawn from this land... their design is inspired by the rich Native American heritage of this area.
