This "Headed for Timber" sculpture is meticulously handcrafted by artists based on Marc Pierce's own life experiences. Each piece comes with a copy of the story from which it was inspired:
"I love everything about elk. I love seeing them in the summer in Yellowstone or on backcountry hikes here in Montana. I love their natural history - that they were once and for a long while prairie animals, until man drove them up into the high country. I love the way they look; the very most handsome North American big game animal. I love pursuing them during hunting season because success in elk hunting seldom comes easy, and when it does there is immense satisfaction and a year's worth of savory steaks. Elk will break a hunter's heart a thousand ways but most painful for me has been spotting big animals, strategizing a stalk, and getting most of the way into range for a high quality shot only to have the wind change direction or otherwise get detected. In this scene, three nice bulls know danger is afoot and they are headed out, probably into higher and denser timber."
